the fallacy of ego

we naked amerikan bi-peds
extol our selves
above
all
else

we rule the world.

we control the land.
we command the sky.

we’ve never been
hungry.
we have, each of us,
more shirts & shoes &
pants & coats
than we could ever
wear

we waste––
every day––
more than
the earth can ever
bear

we’re never alone––
not even for a second

we always carry our portable
conscience-cancelling machine
in our hands

& plug it, as directly
as possible,
into
our brains

it entertains us with
anxiety &
comforts us with
vanity

it knows
who we are
where we are
& why

it tells us what
we want

there is still
another way––

choose life.
seek goodness.
see with the open eyes
of your heart.
