Candles

Two flickering candles
A moment of blazing spiritual intensity.

Molten wax in a frozen pool
Breathing, swirling
Whispers of incense.

Voices echo and disappear
In half-toned, uncertain blackness.

There is solitude enough
For this dual exile,
Freedom for breathing
And forgetting–

Blessing one another
With wavering hands
Subtle pantomime
Burning with life.

Here
There is only silence
And two candles denying the blackness–

The light of two near candles
More remarkable
Burning together
Than alone.
