becoming passive

don’t you agree
we’ve been pushing against
the way of the world
long enough?

tearing chunks of coal
out of the earth
to send smoldering carbon
into the sky?

growing wheat
for inedible gas?

isn’t it easier
to flow downstream?
roll down hill?

hire the wind
to lift our planes?
harness the sun
to toast our pancakes?
to energize our computers
to gallop as fast
as they can?

after all the grasp
& struggle
isn’t the easy way––
the passive way––
best?

a passive home respects
the precious heat
of the sleeping cat––
the pushing force
of the wind––

the shimmering light
through the windows––
the cool of insulation––
the protective warmth
of mylar––

it’s time
to save all the heat we want,
& the cool we want
from the riches
we don’t need
to plunder

it’s time to become
as passive as possible
in America––

so help us
God
