how things are

i
the cause of the universe
is loving-kindness...

we
revolve around eachother
clasp hands & dance

& out of this dance
our human-ness begins.

ii
i do not know you well
but we danced &

i learned how sensitive you
are & intelligent & curious
how you love to look at pictures
the way you warm the space around
you
& how you sympathize
with shadows.

i wanted to confirm
the subtle light that
seemed to glow between us–
to make sure you saw it too.

we agreed to meet
on friday, 20 after 6.

iii
a haggard old man wuz
having a discussion with the agent,
seemed to want a free ride &
got one.
a woman stepped up next who
needed to express her dis
satisfaction with life with
subway management. the man came back. a train
rushed by.

fresh through the turnstile–an uptown 4.
rushhour crowd. no air. short ride.
first car. no problem.

snail’s pace start to brooklyn bridge.
nxt stop
world’s end.

left the station. the train in front seemed
to stall. lights turned yellow
then red. the seconds passed like
headache pain. the minutes
wept &

at twenty past
i experienced the terrible
illusion that i lost you.

iv
by an act of god
or the motorman’s hand
i lost you.

v
what good can come
of this?

vi
it is mystical how
the universe brings people
together.
it is beautiful when people
keep it that way.
