Parable of the Gentle Man

“those summer days, they dead.”

...and in those days
there was a gentle man

a respected guest
welcomed to the hearth
escorted in honor
to the threshold.

he offered his world
to his imagined friend–
it was smashed to distraction
on the floor.

he offered his friendship
but was spurned
without sympathy.

he offered his love
and was asked to depart
alone in darkness.

Such memories avoid speech.
