the necessary hallelujah

it is, perhaps, the most
common in the sea of
stories––

how a boy or girl, a group of
children, a saint, a holy
man, an action hero, a team of
action heroes, save
the world
entire

from the devil, a foul
wizard, an asteroid, a
monster, space invaders, evil,
etc.

this time, the plotline is
real & humankind is
going to have to save
the earth & preserve all
living things from
its own bad
habits––

from pollution, overpopulation,
waste, greed, indifference,
war, hate,
etc.

but amerika is the decadent
consumerland––
the pavlovian squanderer of
great & good
fortune.

under the delusion
that we earned &
own what we
have––

we melted off
the past & the
future for present
currency & our
biggest fear is
change.

freedom is not our
inheritance––
justice, conscience, honesty,
honor, not even
tomorrow can be
counted on as
ours.

or, perhaps, we
have become too
cynical to
believe in life––
to hold on to
living.

too bored to
carry on––
too overwhelmed to
care.

like frogs swimming
complacently in a
slowly, boiling pot of
wealth––

the heat is on,
but there’s just a few
years left.

who will save
us?

& who will save the
world?

if we don’t save
ourselves
