senator,
today is your day
of infamy––
the day you grabbed
the flag & ran
down the
hill.
really, what
difference does it
make that we abandoned
the high moral
ground
that our ancestors &
their ancestors died
for? that hallowed ground is no
reason not to be
practical.
it’s not amerika
that lowered the standards of
morality––
it’s those damn
terrorists.
we
lied at great sacrifice to
preempt a war
to bring freedom to
others.
we
all know our enemies are
evil––
& we can’t abide
evil in any
form.
it’s not that we
torture them,
exactly––
but like our
Presdient sez,
those geneva
conventions are
vague
& if those LAWS are
vague, we may need to
change them to fit new
circumstances.
we affirm enemy
combatants, we throw
out habeas corpus, we
impute hearsay evidence,
etc.
presumption of innocence is
naive.
forget the nuremberg
trials, the formal proceedings
against eichmann or against
the japanese high
command.
by such antique
protocols, even WE
could be prosecuted as
WAR CRIMINALS
or branded as
hypocrites.
the moral conscience
of the people is
sleeping & assumed
dead
& we’re comfortable
to concede our
freedoms out of
fear.
we don’t want to be
perceived as “soft on
terrorism,”
& after all, there are
republican
midterm elections to
win.
