at war in error

the war surges on
through another year––
dragging the world
towards hell.

this is our oh-well war––
our hassle-free-go-shopping,
freedom-marching-forward,
regime-change
war.

oh-well, there were no
weapons of mass destruction;
oh-well, 3,895 amerikans dead &
28,629 wounded;
oh-well, 1,138,528 dead iraqis
managed to be counted &
God only knows their
suffering.

oh-well, so we tortured
a few bad apples,
& lied & destroyed the
evidence.

things that mattered once
matter much less
now.

we can’t remember the reason
we’re killing these people, but
we’re learning
to cope.

For heaven’s sake, we need
to bow our heads
& pray for peace
this Christmas––
before it’s too late,
before we forget why
before we forget
how.
