life’s work

i am the grey, water-rolled pebble
in the creek sand

i am the raindrop that ignites
the seed

i am breath transformed
to light

i am the madness of dawn

i open my eyes in pungent earthly
air

people hurt. people hurt the water.
people hurt the sky. people hurt
the bumbling bees & the whispering trees.
people hurt people

i am the love that kindles the fluttering
flame in your heart

that makes the mind stop squabbling
& begin feeling, thinking, caring
knowing

no need to fear––
you cannot
die

you are we & we
are every this & that
that is or was or wishes to be
dreamed

i am the love that squeezes the energy
out of the sun & the rabbits
out of the rabbit

our work in this weeping world is
kindness
& we can take no rest
‘til all is
well
