our president
threatens every moment
of worldly peace & calm
with personal expletives
he’s fueling his addiction
to power
& expressing his
insatiable need for
attention
for his ego’s sake
bad behavior––violence
& hatred––make fascinating
entertainment… don’t they?
a man without virtues
(save cunning… which is
not a virtue)
is capturing our viewing
eyes––
he burns & he rages
he rages & he burns––
flipping & flopping
flopping & flipping––
to suit his scowling
moods––
this is not
how a conservative
behaves––
or an evangelical
or a republican or a
christian or a democrat––
power is the
fool’s gold of madness &
fear
our president brags
how he could shoot
a person dead in the middle
of 5th avenue in broad daylight
without casting a shadow of
guilt or doubt in the minds
of his enchanted base
thus the law & the constitution
are shattered by the fist
of anarchy
as excited eyes
don’t blink
this nation has always
been confused by its
open arms & promise of
equality––
no religion has succeeded
in establishing neighborly
love on earth
& we are a belligerent
nation––
as we endlessly impose pain &
suffering on others––even
children
we are a nation of
individuals––
we do not equate
individuality with
responsibility or self-
sufficiency but with
selfishness
we congratulate ourselves
for the wealth that was
stolen from the true settlers
of this land and built
by slaves & immigrants
as the wages of their work
were spirited away by a white
middle class whose riches
were quietly confiscated
by the top 1% of the rich
& their empire corporations––
they don’t just want wealth––
authoritarians want power
too––
they’re offering you bliss
if you merely surrender
all your freedom to them
like a slaughterhouse owner
cares for sheep
every day
the leader of the free world
finds new ways to be
mean & do harm
to people &
the earth––
yearning to sprawl
his name over all creation
where is our indivisible nation
now?
& the proposition that all men
are created equal?
with liberty & justice for
whom?
