harm, before the
screaming
witness of the
world?
the nose broken &
the blood
splattered & the
teeth smashed & the
lips torn & then
the seeing globes of
the soul are crushed,
first one, then the
other. & the cheeks
are caved-in &
the forehead battered
flat until all
identity is
lost.
what great
evil of power
have we taught our
young? & our
earth’s children?
what have we
done in the name of
faceless authority?
what deep
seeds of hate &
suffering have been
sown
if two nations can
stomach the slow,
tortuous mutilation of
the lives of
others?
how long before
the forces of
destruction cannot be
stopped
& the war-forsaken
virtues of heartfulness &
kindness, humanity &
compassion, reason &
conscience, proportion &
restraint, wisdom &
civilization, humility &
grace stop
breathing
& are forever
buried in a shallow
grave?
