For Dominic and Joanna
When Dominic asked me to be
his best man,
I was surprised.
But soon, I realized
that it was foolish for me
To contradict his will in this
or any proclamation of
What is “Best.”
And as I thought about
“The Best,”
I came to understand
that all he wanted to do
Was share
The Best,
The very Best in this life––
With his family, and
Closest friends.
The celebration of his marriage was
A sacrament of beauty––
Of music and dance,
Lovely words and fine impressions,
(The coach even arranged for perfect weather.)
So I offer this toast
To all the Best in this life––
To Dominic and Joanna,
Their families and friends,
The loving power of all things beautiful,
And to the sacredness of their marriage.
