witness for the Prosecution

i
every old rug
in the world
has dirt under it.

you don’t need to be
an attorney general with
a multi-million dollar
investigative budget
to find it.

just turn over the edge
of any old rug
& see.

go ahead.
pour the bleach.
you’ve scorched
some dirt,
but the carpet’s
ruined.

ii
fear of the partial
application of the law
is natural

(scary…
like a coven of puritans
with a boiling
pot)

especially when the law
is a willful means
to a political
end.

fear is much different
from respect for the law,
and far far from
love.

iii
it’s no longer justice
when untried allegations
are blasted over the headlines,
and smug images
of Prosecutors appear––

to advance their personal ambitions &
intimidate the public
in glaring black &
white.
